The incision starts horizontally below the hairline, extends along a vertical line in front of the ear, goes around the lobule and ends in the scalp behind the ear. These incisions are made in concealed areas but will leave visible and permanent scars. Excess fat can be sucked out from the neck and chin area.
The skin of the cheeks and neck is peeled off from the deep planes. The muscles are re-tensioned. The skin is then repositioned and the excess skin is resected on demand without tension. Suturing is usually done with absorbable sutures. Drainage can be put in place to evacuate secretions and prevent the formation of a hematoma. The anesthesia used can be local anesthesia combined with sedation or general anesthesia. The dressing is usually quite bulky, enveloping the scalp.
This text provides basic information on the principles and procedure of the cervico-facial lift. A more detailed information sheet will be given to you during your consultation. A good understanding of the procedure and the expected result is essential before considering this intervention. It must be emphasized that the purpose of this surgery is to bring about an improvement and not to obtain perfection. If your wishes are realistic, the result will satisfy you.
The initial consultation
The initial consultation is an opportunity to examine your face, discuss your motivations and explain the expected results. The questioning and the examination make it possible to look for possible pathologies which could lead to complications, such as uncontrolled arterial hypertension, coagulation disorders or smoking.
Any surgical procedure, even carried out with competence in conditions of maximum security, carries a risk of complication. These complications are infrequent and usually minimal in this case. There are risks of hematoma, infection or reaction to anesthesia. You should know that the anesthetic techniques, the products used and the monitoring methods have made immense progress. They offer optimal safety, especially when the intervention is performed outside of the emergency room and on a healthy person, but they can nevertheless carry the risk of serious complications. The accidental injury of the nerve which controls the muscles of mimicry is exceptional. It causes usually temporary paralysis.
What is not corrected by the intervention
A facelift consists of a re-tensioning of the tissues. The quality of the skin is not modified. Expression wrinkles, crow's feet wrinkles or perioral wrinkles are not modified. Deep fractures are improved by the tension exerted on the skin without ever completely disappearing. The appearance of the eyelids is not corrected by an isolated cervico-facial lift.
It is imperative to stop smoking at least two months before the surgery. Taking aspirin is prohibited 10 days before the operation. Before the surgical act, it is necessary to wash the body and the hair with an antiseptic soap. It is necessary to have a reduced activity for at least 3 to 5 days and to avoid any major effort for a month. Bruising and edema are visible for two to three weeks. Scars can be hidden in front and behind by hair. The only area visible in front of the ear can be temporarily masked by covering makeup from the 6th day. The resumption of a professional activity is possible after two to three weeks.
